How to Make Money Writing Online
72When writing online to make money, content is important, keywords are important, but this still isn't going to make the money you'd like to earn. There are thousands of websites out there that are writing about the same thing everyone else is.
What is the secret then? I just read the list of the 10 youngest billionaires in the United States. The youngest is Dustin Moscovitz one of the co-founders of Facebook. He only owns 6% of Facebook and yet he is a billionaire. Having left the company, he still owns his 6% share, but has started his own software company. He is only 8 days younger than the next youngest billionaire Mark Zuckerburg who was his college roommate. Mark may not be able to say he is the youngest, but he is worth more at 6.9 billion.
Now what am I getting at here? It takes hard work to make money yes. It takes a little talent, but the most important thing still isn't that. It takes a great idea if you want to get some attention to your Hub. I've written 64 hubs on Hubpages and 2/3 of my traffic is generated from just one of those hubs. You need to use a different angle or think of a subject that doesn't already have millions of articles already written about it.
Many hubbers have read about Jerrico Usher here on Hubpages. He wrote one hub "How to Get Rid of a Pimple Overnight" and earns $100 a month from that one hub. What is different about his hub? Lots of sites have written about how to get rid of acne, but he tells you how to get rid of it overnight. Yes, he has great content and keywords, but that one little word "overnight" made all the difference in the world.
A hub needs to have something unique to make it stand out in the crowd. It may just be the use of a new word or it may take a new concept no one else has thought about. I've decided myself to review all of the hubs I've written and see if I can think of new ways to present them. It might take just one little word or maybe an entirely different slant.
I'm going to try to think about more brilliant subjects when I write, but new concepts? That will be a hard one.
Now that you have a brilliant idea, you need to consider using SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) Use the Google Keyword Tool to find a good phrase about the subject. Maybe another phrase would be better to use or you may have chosen just the right phrase. Check the number of searches for your chosen keyword.
Type the keyword phrase into Google Search. If the search returns article after article about the same topic and they are all well written, you may want to consider writing about something else. If the top couple of articles are poorly written, you've hit the jackpot.
Your title and url should contain a keyword or keyword phrase that covers the topic. Include it in the first sentence and maybe once more in the article. You don't want to overdo it though. Many say that using a keyword over 4% of the time is too much. Then it is considered keyword stuffing and the search engines don't like that either.
Write about what you love or have an extensive knowledge about. If you need to research the subject read as many articles as you can about it. You want to use unique content. After finishing the article, it is always a good idea to let it set for a day or two and then edit. You'll catch spelling and punctuation mistakes much quicker this way.
Now that the article is complete, you aren't finished. You need to promote it somewhere. If it would interest your friends, post it on Facebook. Add a link at Redgage, Reddit, Digg and other bookmarking sites. Continue to add your link. Most successful writers say they continue to do this.
If you don't get traffic right away at Google and the other search engines, remember that an article has to age for awhile. The older it gets, the more it will climb in the searches. This can take as long as 8 months.
Now get busy and write your next article and you will be on your way to making money. Just stick to it. A couple of articles aren't going to do it. Keep at. Make a schedule for yourself and set some goals and you'll be a success.
Thanks for reading my hub and I hope I was able to provide some inspiration to someone. If you come up with that brilliant idea that really sells, please share it with us. We'll all applaud your success.

LOL! Yes, the out-of-the-box idea is what it takes, isn't it. Oh, dear, I'm in the same doomed boat as you!
Hey, now! That's a good idea Barbara Kay. I might try that myself :)
Yes, there are other people out there, that are making money off their ideas...it just goes to prove anyone of us could do the same. We just have to stick to searching out promotion and connecting with the right people! You are so right, the internet is such a good tool, that wasn't there years ago:) Great Statistic's!
Great idea, being controversial is another way of gaining wide readership. So many hubbers here use controversy to get more followers and I think its worth using to get those regular clicks coming.
Thanks, Barbara Kay. I am going to do the same; review my hubs and think about that one key word ...
Hi thanks for this hub. I began writing on HP about three months ago and it's great however it is only now that I am preparing my hubs hoping to make money. I know it's going to be hard work and total commitment, but I am determined that I'm never giving up on it!!
My knowledge of computers was very rare until I started writing on here and that is why hubs such as this one are priceless for me.
I have only just come accross you on here and I am now looking forward to reading more of your work.
Take care.
I do believe all you said before. I also write from the bottom of my heart. I love to share something useful. All the money will follow us if we hard work. Writing online is not like a get rich scheme. But we have to hard work with this. But the most enjoyable things is we can write what do we like. Very inspiring hub. Success for you.
Blessing and hugs,
Voted up. Great words, wise. I don't know if I've sort of given up on making money online, but I do still enjoy writing, so just have to do it when the urge strikes.
Best of luck. Thinking of the box is indeed a great deal and to follow what we are thinking takes time, in my perspective.
hard work will always pay off, isn't.
Yes, there is some work. On the way to success, there is no shortcut.
You appear to me, to be already quite successful. You wrote here a short stroke. But the number of comments is impressive. My hubs are longer. But the number of comments is much lower.
I am confident that quality content will prevail. How often do we do a Search and see a bunch of articles that are obvously Off the Cuff with no research or not even a good understanding of the subject. We know it when we land on a good article that gives us all sides of a particular subject and the person obviously knows what they are talking about. Nice Hub.
Yes, you DID provide inspiration, thank you :) I really do need to concentrate more on creating clever and better titles (and content to go with those titles) and not just concentrate on SEO.
So many things to work on, so for a new hubber it's still a bit overwhleming! Thank you for the well-written advice!
Down to earth, sound advice, and yes, well written. You sound very inspiritational. The thing about promoting your article and revising an article after writing, a couple of days later ... is a helpful tip that can get you rewards in the long run.
A novel, unique concept - well, that's another thing !!!
