Unusual Ways to Get Free Traffic

I started this hub, because I'm hearing so many people complain that they aren't making money. Money is earned by getting traffic. I'm including some ways you may not have thought about to increase your traffic and I hope you can see some cash in your pocket soon.
Because it can be difficult and take a long time to rate well in the search engines, you need to find other ways to get traffic when you first begin writing online. Don't worry, as your work ages it will rank better in the searches and the money will start coming in. When that happens, you should still use these ideas.
You probably already know that you need links to your pages to rate well in the search engine. You also need proper use of keyword phrases. I'm not going to cover SEO (search engine optimization) here, because there are already pages upon pages written about this subject that you can read and may already have. I've listed some helpful pages at the bottom if you haven't. Be sure to read the pages in the Hubpage Learning Center. These give good advice and you'll learn much of what you need to know.
I am going discuss some ways you may not have thought about before. They don't have anything to do with SEO. These should help you get traffic.
Tip #1 Include Your Url at the Bottom of Emails
Always include the url to your profile page or from your website under your email signature. Of course you aren't going to want to do this if you are sending a resume for a job or any other professional email, but do use it in all other emails.
Most of your friends and relatives will be curious enough to click on it and may become one of your followers. Don't forget to keep writing, so they have something new to read everytime they visit.
Tip# 2 Use Yahoo Groups
Find a niche to write about. I'm like most of the writers here and write about many different topics, but the majority of my writing falls into 3 categories. Join Yahoo Groups and find groups pertaining to your niches and join them. Whenever you write a new hub that they'd be interested in, post it to the group. You'd be surprised how much traffic you can get this way.
There is a group for everyone. A group for writers to share their stories and poems is also included.
If the group is large, you can get as many as 500 visitors the first day. The traffic often continues for weeks, since many of the members don't read their emails everyday. Traffic will start dwindling, but will keep up for awhile. In the meantime, you need to do more writing.
Please don't spam the groups. Only add links that the group would be interested in reading. Since there are so many interests to choose from, you don't need to do it. I make it a rule that I only post one link a week per group.

Tip# 3 Start a Facebook Page
Be sure to start a page on Facebook for at least one of your niches. Members of Facebook will find your page and join. I have just over 100 followers this way, which isn't a lot, but every bit helps. My daughter has over 4000 for Nascar, so it can be huge.
Whenever I write a new page that would interest my followers, I post the link. This has increased my traffic.
Join one of the online writers groups on Facebook. There are groups that were created just for you to add you links. One that I belong to is "Online Article Writers."
Tip# 4 If You Use Amazon
Some of you may be able to use this tip and others won't. I sell books on Amazon. Everytime I sell a book in the craft category, I include the url to my website and let them know that I have free patterns there. Everyone wants something free and since they already like crafts, they visit.
It doesn't have to be books. Maybe you write about music and you have extra CD's to sell. Use your imagination.
Tip# 5 Join Forums
Write about what you are interested in and then join some forums about those topics. Post a reply to questions when you can be helpful. Most forums will allow you to post a url under your name. Make your post helpful, not just to add your url.
It is best to be a member of the group for awhile before doing this, or they may think that you are spamming. Answer questions whenever your advice is helpful and do it several times and then add your url on a post.
You may end up becoming the expert everyone looks to for advice.
Tip# 6 Be Sure Your Profile Page is Indexed
Check that your profile page is being indexed at Google. If not, submit it. This url will make it easy. http://www.google.com/submityourcontent/website-owner/
Tip# 7 Keep Your Content Fresh
Update your pages and add new information anytime it becomes available. Edit out any information that is no longer applicable. Keeping your pages fresh help them rank better in the Search Engines.
Tip#8 Join Pinterest
At Pinterest, you choose your areas of interest and pin a photo on your board. Others can click on the photo and go to your page. They can also share it with friends. I have just joined this site and I'm getting a little traffic from it. Maybe as I get more involved I'll get even more.
I hope some of these ideas will help some of you start getting some serious traffic which equals more money. If you have any unusual ideas that I haven't mentioned, please share them with us.

Good tips!!! There is only one problem. So many people do not know if their profile page, hub, articles, blog site, web site is Indexed or not. Here ia a hub that tells you how to know whether Google has indexed your profile page, hubs, etc. Hubber also tells you the steps to take in order to get indexed as well.
Both of these hubs together, and separately give great information.

Some interesting and helpful tips that I haven't thought of and will need to give a try. One thing is certain, most writers write to be read at some point, and getting MORE readers is certainly something to shoot for. And the ones who are especially important are the ones who come from outside this site. Those are the ones who click the ads. :)

frugalfamily, Type Yahoo Groups in any search engine. It will ask you to sign in or start an account. Just click on start an account and go from there. You can look groups over before you signup, so you can decide if there is a group for you.
At Amazon, I just include the url on the invoice/receipt that I send to them. I write a little note thanking them for the purchase and then tell them you'd think they'd be interested in the info at the url.

hello again, I have signed up with yahoo groups and got accepted into one of these groups but they do not allow me to use my hub links in them. Any thoughts?
I'm not sure what group you joined. There must be other groups in your category. I looked at your articles and they don't fit well into most groups other than I know there are groups that you can share your recipe hub. Try homesteading groups, saving money groups and there may be recipe groups for that hub.
The link has to fit into their interest category. Check group rules, before you join. Some state them on their page. Your other hubs, I don't know what type of group you could share them in.

Yahoo groups sounds good but how do you find the time? Sounds like setting it all up would take quite awhile. Thanks for the tip and I will check in to this as soon as I have time.
All I do is work for the purpose of obtaining more traffic constantly - my main niches are pretty saturated and to get up there will take a ton of writing and linking.
It doesn't take long to set the Yahoo groups up. Once you join, you just need to click on a button to add yourself to a group. It does have to be a group that will appreciate your articles and some groups won't allow link sharing.

Have been working on increasing my traffic and never even thought about the footer on my email, will update my home and phone emails ASAP. I also never use Yahoo, but considering how massive they are it would be foolish to pass that by. Really great article, short and to the point.

Sorry to butt in once again but I did have one question: how do you check to see if your profile page in indexed with Google? As a newbie that one has me confused.
billybuc, To check if your page is indexed just type in billybuc hubpages in the google search engine. If your profile page doesn't come up, you know that it isn't indexed. It might not be indexed yet since you've only been here for 3 weeks. If not I'd submit it.

Great tips for finding traffic! I'll have to check out Yahoo Groups. When I sell items on eBay and print out a package slip, I add my profile link and my blog link in case my buyer is interested.

Yvette Parker, If you want to know if your profile page is indexed, all it means is that your profile page at Hubpages shows up in the Google search engine. Type in your profile user name in the Google Search. If it is indexed it will show up there. If not, there is a good article here at Hubpages that tells you how to get it added.

These are great ideas for getting traffic. In line with your Amazon tip another thing you can do is honest reviews of books in your niche that you've read. You can't post links in your reviews, but you can post links in your Amazon member bio. When people see enough of your reviews and trust you they will be more likely to click through and visit your links because you will be seen as an "expert" in your category.

I would like to mention a few myself, Recently i joined pinterest and someone pinned some of my pictures on his/her site and I got 400% more traffic. And the one that has increases my traffic is by commenting on blogs.

How much traffic have you been able to get from pinterest and how has it converted? I just signed up a few days ago and was wondering if it had any potential for driving converting traffic or if it's mostly Reddit/Digg/Facebook-type "window shoppers."

I am glad that I found this today. I will bookmark it for future reference. I have just finished e-publishing a few books and wonder if these ideas would work for that. I never thought of the idea of a facebook account just for that purpose.

Nicely done and thanks for the tips. I'm really glad I came across the hub. I like what you wrote about your main areas of interest--this is key. I've finally identified 4 areas where I keep writing: business, creative (fiction, indy film), travel, and relationships. I'll start a FB page for my business writing to start with. And, duh, I have Yahoo groups for my fiction. I never thought about it for Hubpages.

Don, I have 2 pages for two different interests. You can do what ever you'd like and have as many as you want or you could have just one that says it is your hubpage articles. My craft one, gets a lot of traffic. My gardening one gets hardly any.

Another way is to read post on hub pages make friends and followers. Great hub with a lot of good advice.

viquar, It isn't considered spam as long as it is something all group members are interested in. Like if you join a gardening group and do a hub about gardening. There are also groups for writers that were created just to share your writing.

Hi Barbara! These are some really good tips. I really like the tip about joining a Yahoo group or a forums. I can imagine the yahoo groups could bring a flood of traffic. I just started using Social Mokee, and waiting to see what type of results it will bring. Also try Seekyt, there are just so many ways to get traffic.
But the best way to get traffic is from our own HP community, and google is so good to articles which are SEO optimized, and well keyword researched.

I find that the email links don't work very well. My clients aren't even smart enough to notice that my website and full contact details are in my email signature. It's amazing how many of them ask for my phone number when I plaster it all over the web.

There are some really good basic tips here that - believe it or not - I hadn't thought of before. I'll definitely be adding my HubPages website to my emails. I've started a page on Facebook but am so lost on that site I don't know that it's going to help much. In any case this was a Hub well worth reading so thanks for the pointers.
Thanks for the hub. However i would like to note about the onsite optimization, putting an h1 in the header of the site and the keywords at the very left top plus adding these keywords at the very right bottom helps. Course with h1 tagging. Search engines love to index the pages that way.

...almost two years here at the HUB and I haven't made a single penny - my scores are always in the low 90's - sometimes they peak at 95. I am a creative writer (and some say a legend here at the Hub - lol) .....well I certainly have good numbers, per capita, per ratio, at 1,021 followers and 1,129 hubs but as we all know creative writers don't make much money here and it's a hard field to break into as a professional - should have been a plumber or an electrician - but like they say you can't change the spots on a leopard - I am what I am for better or for worse - but that said you really know how to put together a serious world class hub that would look good or read well anywhere in this cyber universe - so without further adieu I will post your most enlightening advice and information here on my Facebook page with a direct link back here at lake erie time ontario canada 2:10pm

this is a great article! the yahoo groups tip you gave is one that i hope will bring me some great traffic as my articles are very factual and informative... i have just joined some relevant groups..
one thing i wanted to mention was once you join a group, you get an email saying you can email the whole group by emailing a particular email address - this seems particularly useful... you can create a email list of groups that are relevant to your articles and send links through to those...

I'm not sure how to send my profile page to google or where to go for that matter, but this article was very informative. Sometimes the tips are good from people, but the "how to" is assumed. Sometimes even when you do something you're not quite sure if you've done it correctly. Just venting!

For the last days I have not written any article because I am taking time to learn about how to increase traffic. Doing this takes a lot of time but it is so good when I see how my numbers increase. Thanks to writers like you, I am learning more and more everyday.

Great ideas. I'm happy to say that I'm already doing most of what you outline. I hadn't yet indexed my profile page, but always index my articles with google. Thanks for the tips.
Don't forget to mention that comments are an easy way to keep your content fresh. High quality and long comments are crawled by the search engines so they always see "fresh" content on your hub.
That's why I encourage people to critique and comment on all my hubs.

Superb tips! I have tried almost all of them already, except yahoo groups. However, a worthy addition to this list could be Google +1. It's not just a social bookmarking plugin that can spread the word in your circlet, Google SERP has already started to put some weight to the sites that have more +1.
