Make Your Own Natural Hair Care Products
Haircare products can be expensive, so why not make your own? These shampoos and conditioners are made from products you probably already have in the kitchen. You don't need to worry about chemicals and they are easy to make.
I haven't tried these on hair that has been permed or colored, so proceed with caution if you question any ingredient. The only ones that I would question are those containing vinegar or baking soda and they can change the PH balance.
Homemade Shampoos
You need to choose the right shampoo for your hair type. Once you've found the right one, you'll probably never go back to the name brands again. Any shampoo that contains oil for instance, isn't going to work well for oily hair.
Baking Soda Shampoo
I've heard many woman rant and rave how well the baking soda shampoo works. Just add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 cup of water. Stir it to dissolve. If your hair is extra long, you may need to use more.
Baking soda can dry your hair out, so use a vinegar rinse (see below) after shampooing.
Beer Shampoo - To Add Volume
Make your own beer shampoo. Ad 3/4 cup of beer to 1 cup of any kind of shampoo. You'll need to first boil the beer in a pan that doesn't react to the beer until the beer is boiled down to 1/4 cup. This will remove the alcohol from the beer, so it doesn't dry out your hair. Then cool down the beer and add it to the shampoo. Store in a bottle and keep capped.
It will give your hair wonderful body, because the proteins from the malt and hops will give a coating to the hair and help build it up. It will also help repair damaged hair.
Instant Dry Shampoo - For Oily Hair
If you are in a hurry and your hair is oily and there just isn't time to shampoo, this is a quick fix for oily hair. All you will need is cornstarch or finely ground oatmeal. Don't use the packets with sugar added, but the oatmeal out of the box.
Hold up you hair to access the scalp and and just rub the cornstarch or oatmeal through the hair. Do this across the entire scalp or oily area. It will absorb the oil. When you are finished brush your hair until all particles are out. You may need to shake your brush once in a while to keep it clean as you are brushing.
We used this idea in the 70's, but used powder instead. It worked great.
Homemade Rinses and Conditioners
Lemon Koolaid - Remove Built-up Chemicals
To remove built-up chemicals on your hair, use a package of lemon koolaid. Mix as you normally would without adding the sugar. This works well to remove even rust from the hair. Only use this once a month and use a conditioner when you are finished.
Mayonnaise - For Deep Conditioning
I tried this years ago and it does condition your hair, but it is one of those things that easy does it. Only use a small amount. Use this just on the lower part of your hair for a good conditioning and for split ends and not your scalp or the hair near your scalp. It may take two shampoos to wash out since it is oily.
Pumpkin - Conditioner
For an easy conditioner, mix a can of pumpkin with a serving sized container of plain yogurt. Apply this to damp hair. Leave on for about 10-15 minutes. Shampoo afterwards. Use this treatment just a couple of times a month.
Vinegar - Deep Cleaning and PH Balance
Use vinegar to deep clean your hair. It will restore the proper PH to your hair and remove residues from haircare products. Only do this about once a week. Pour one cup over unwashed hair. Be sure to condition afterwards. For a nicer smelling scent, use a fruit vinegar, like raspberry.
Be sure to try of few of these until you find the perfect shampoo or conditioner for your hair type. It will save you a lot of money.
