Make More Money Writing for Hubpages

Whether you are writing for money or writing because your enjoy it, everyone's big question is, how do I get more people to read my articles. This is the only way to earn more money with affiliates. The more traffic, the more clicks you'll get. Included here are a few useful tips I've learned while writing online for various sites including Hubpages.

Check Keywords First

Use the Google Adwords Keyword tool before you even begin writing. You aren't really searching for a keyword, but a keyword phrase. My keyword phrase for this article is "earn money writing". This isn't the best keyword phrase because there is a lot of competition when I go to Google Search. There is big competition for any phrase about making money writing online.

Now that you have chosen your keyword phrase, look down the column that says "Competition" on the Adwords tool. This is the competition between advertisers for this keyword phrase. The more competition the higher paying the keyword will be. You want to choose a phrase that has high competition. The best keyword to choose isn't always the one with the most competition, but choose one that is at least high. Again, this column means competition between advertisers. High competition between advertisers is good, because the highest bidders for the word will pay more per click.

Next look at how many Global searches have been made. You want at least a decent amount of traffic, but you don't necessarily want the phrase with the most searches. The reason is that possibly too many other writers have used the same keyword.

Now go to the Google Search engine, because this is where you will get the most traffic. Check how many other writers have written about the same subject. If it's in the millions, maybe you should write about something else. The competition between writers may be just too high.

Look at the other keyword phrases. There might be one that you can still use.

Your Content

Be sure to include your keyword phrase in one of your first two sentences. It is important to use your keyword phrase a few times in the body of your work, but don't overdo it. The search engines will catch what you are trying to do and it will hurt your page rank. It makes reading your page tiresome for readers too.

Use some of the other phrases you've seen on the Adsense Keyword tool. You may be picked up for these phrases. A good example is my hub with a recipe for German Sand Tart Cookies. Recipes have stiff competition, but I wrote about my German Grandmother's cooking before I shared the recipe and I get picked up for German cooking, German tarts and more. This hub is one of my higher traffic hubs.

Provide a decent amount of good content. 350 to 500 words is good and more is even better. If your article gets lengthy, divide it up and be sure to put a subheading above it. Otherwise your reader is going to get bored and leave the page.

Try to please your readers and help them with useful information. When you are finished writing your article, let it rest for awhile before publishing. If you edit it right away, it is to close to you and you'll miss mistakes. We've all seen great articles with lots of grammar and spelling mistakes. This is how it happens. We're in a hurry to share our work with the world and miss errors.

It's a good idea to use a spell checker, but many English words can be spelled the same way. The spell checker won't pick these up.

Never copy the work of anyone else. Google will pick it up right away and they are the search engine that will bring you the most traffic. Copying is plagiarism and it is against the law.

Work at perfecting your own writing, so people want to read it and they will. Try to always include an introduction and a conclusion with your content. Work at making the perfect hub, not just writing lots of them.

After Publishing Your Hub

Now you've published your hub. That always gives me a big sense of accomplishment. You aren't finished yet though. Now you need to get people to read it.

Add some links to the social websites where you belong. These include Facebook, Twitter, My Space and any others. Don't overwhelm your friends, but when you publish a hub they'd like, you can share it. Some other sites I use are Red Gage, Infopirate and Digg.

Don't expect to make money immediately. It will take a few months. Keep writing more hubs and eventually the money will start coming in. Best of luck.

Those other sites you mentioned...Xomba, RedGage, Digg, etc., is it just a matter of posting the link there like it is on FB and twitter?

I personally like Xomba a lot. Haven't tried RedGage and I'm still on the fence about She Told Me. Great info.

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 15 months ago

gourownway, Xomba is a favorite with me too. She Told Me just doesn't seem to do as well, but does bring me some traffic. Red Gage sends me quite a bit of traffic, but it would take for ever to get a payout. They do have a random weekly contest though for $25.00 and I won it my second week there.

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 15 months ago

Peggw W, Yes you just sign up for them and then start adding links. Xomba has now changed to needing to write 100 words instead of 50 though. One of my hubs shows up better as an Xomba link to the hub rather than the hub itself. Most of my traffic to that hub comes from Xomba.

Barbara, do you feel that the traffic you are getting from Red Gage is converting into clicks for you on hubpages?

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 15 months ago

gourownway, I can't really answer that question because I know where my traffic is coming from, but I have no way to track who is clicking and who is not. Thanks for reading the hubs.

Great information on the keyword tool, your's is the first that gives a good explanation of how to use it! I've gone on to the keyword tool site put in words or phrase and came up with info I wasn't sure what to do with! Thanks for explaining it in detail!

I just signed up for Red Gage and got over 600 hits today, but mostly on photos. Then I read a hub forum stating that they charge you to use the card. I can't stand sites that are misleading. Thanks for your informative hub.

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 7 months ago

I won the contest and got one of the cards, but I was never charged for using it. However, I have heard on the news that stores may start charging for using debit cards. I use Redgage more for the link back to my hubs and site more than anything else.

Hello Barbara,

This was useful information, I appear to have got the whole adwords thing backwards.

I go for low competition only and didn't bother with the high competition as I thought that it meant that there were millions of articles not advertisers competing.

Back to the drawing board for me then.

Bookmarked for future reference. Thanks again. voted up

I like your hubs, and now that I am getting more interested in writing my own stuff (passive income) instead of blog posts for others (active income) I am taking all your suggestions very seriously. Thanks for your friendly, helpful and knowledgeable tone. Cheers, ECAL
