The internet is bursting with free vintage crochet patterns. Most are easy to read. A few use thread and yarn that is no longer available. For most of these, you can just make swatches until you can match the gauge. A few sites carry the smaller sizes of thread and hooks.

In the first half of the 1900s, our grandmothers and great grandmothers used mainly thread and crocheted some beautiful doilies, tablecloths, bedjackets and yokes. Crochet baby patterns and lace were common too. In the forties and fifties they started using the art to create potholders, toys and children's clothing.

It wasn't until the 70s that crochet really took off. Along with the hippie movement, clothing became popular. Annie's Attic became part of the crochet scene and Annie Potter created new items and inspired many other crocheters. The art has grown from there, until we have patterns now for almost everything imaginable.

There were so many crochet doilies in the house growing up that were made by my great grandmother. She was a crochet master. The slippers do look delicate yet comfortable and I like the entire idea of them.

Great hub, it reminded me of the days when I was young.

This Hub is a great resource. I love crocheting because you can outfit a home and make clothing items. It's such an easy craft to get started with because you don't need many materials.

I love to crochet, and vintage items are my best. I love the times when things were simple and beautiful. My grandmother spent alot of time baking and crocheting many things. I still have some of the doilies she had made in her time. Thanks for sharing.

when I was 16 my grandmother taught me how to crochet. I have always loved it. but My grandmother could not read. so of course I never learned to read a pattern. but I can look at a stitch and copy it.. I do not know how I do this.. but I do love it.. I think i may have invented a few new stitches in my day..lol.. thank you for writing this and doing all the research I voted up and interesting..

One of these days, I'm going to the arts and crafts store and I'll get a crochet kit and learn. I know how to knit. But I love the patterns in crochet and people say it's easier than knitting. Do you think that's true? By the way, great article. Voted up. :)

I think this is very pretty and helpful for those who are looking for patterns or just browsing. I really like how it reminds me of how some of my family members made items when I was younger and did not appreciate it as much then as I do now!

I've been into delicate crocheting since I was a small child. The slippers IMMEDIATELY caught my eye, and I'm very glad you published this hub with that and even more patterns to try out. (The slippers are at the top of my list to make, however--spring will be here someday!)
