Free Crochet Tote Bag Patterns

By Barbara Kay

Crochet tote bags are a useful item for carrying books, clothes to the beach and a multitude of other things. Get out your crochet hooks and make a bag you'll be proud to carry. Several of the tote bag patterns can be used as crocheted purses too.

Tote bags are great gift items too. Kids can keep their toys in them, Barbie clothes, use them as school bags, keep your current crochet project in one and use as overnight bags and more. Make several totes and keep one for yourself and make some extras for others or bazaars.

Free Patterns

Below you will find several free patterns. Be sure to check them out. Just click on the blue titles to be taken to the patterns.

These totes are made from plastic grocery shopping bags, so won't cost you a penny to make. The plastic used is often called plarn. The totes work great for wet bathing suits and are sturdy enough for books.

The free patterns are brought to you by Canadian Living.

This pattern is from Caron Yarn. It uses 2 colors of Simply Soft yarn and a size H hook.

The 3 Tier Heart Bag by Donna's Designs is unique for a crochet purse, because as the name implies it has 3 sections to keep your purse organized. Each section is one heart on top of another. She used 8 ounces of Red Heart yarn and size H hook.

The Apple Tote by Angel's Crafts isn't for carrying apples. It is a tote with a charted apple on the front of the bag. It is crocheted with crochet cotton and a size H hook.

To crochet this bag, you'll need 5 cones of nylon thread and a size H aluminum crochet hook. You should be able to create the bag quickly since it is made with two strands of nylon held together.

This beach bag pattern is being offered by "Crochet Now." The pattern is vintage and is created with Speed Cro-Sheen. If you have room in your purse it would work great to carry with you, so you have a bag when you visit flea markets etc. Of course, you can use it as a beach bag too. Since it is a mesh design, it will dry quickly if you put in a wet suit.

This bag is crocheted in bright stripes and would work as a large purse too. This is an extra nice pattern that would be a good way to use up scrap yarn. Simple stitches are used.

The crocheted tote is crocheted with Classic Elite yarn and was featured by Canadian Living. It is crocheted in the round. It appears to be simple to crochet and looks easy enough for a beginner that can do the basic stitches.

The Easter Tote is perfect for spring in pastel colors. She used Red Heart Preference yarn, but said Super Saver yarn will work fine too. A size H and K hook are also needed.

This is a great bag to take along when buying the groceries, but it can be used for many other uses. The bag would work great for storing your current crochet or knitting project.

The Granny Drawstring Tote bag is crocheted with Red Heart Eco-Cotton Blend. This is a larger bag, if you like large purses. A crochet hook size H and I are used in creating the project.

The pattern is created with 8 granny squares. It is a purse, but can be used as a bag also. It is a great way to use extra yarn that you have in the house.

The Gypsy bag was popular in the '70s and rightly so, because it hangs on your shoulder and can be used as either an extra large purse or a tote. Not only is it useful, but attractive too.

The bag is crocheted with 4 different colors of yarn, so would make a nice project to use up scraps. A size J hook is used. The type of yarn is not listed with this vintage pattern, but it appears to be a worsted weight.

This pattern is extra simple and would make a nice project for beginners. You crochet a rectangle and then sew them together in a special folded pattern.

The Peachy Summer tote starts with a circle on the bottom even though it is a rectangular tote. She includes her story of creating it, which you'll enjoy.

As you've probably already guessed, this tote isn't crocheted to tote trees. It has some pretty embellishments of trees on the tote.

This tote is provided by Woman's Day and from Designs Adorned. The tote is crocheted with Brown Sheep Yarn Company Cotton Fleece yarn and a size F crochet hook.

Here is another project that you can just recycle what you already have around the house. This rag bag tote is a free pattern that uses fabric strips and is a vintage pattern.

She used an old queen size sheet to create the bag. Another thought is using an old shower curtain. If you don't already have either of these, start looking and all kinds of fabrics could be used.

The bag is designed with simple stitches and a beginner could tackle it.

The Spiral Textured Seed Stitch bag is an average size bag and is an extra nice pattern. You'll be proud to carry the bag around with you to use as a purse or a small tote.

A great resource for free crochet bag patterns. I'm going to bookmark this hub for future reference. Just a note, the first link you have for the 2 plastic bag totes leads to a pattern for crocheted motifs that are then sewn on a store bought bag. Rated up and useful!

I can't put a pic beside each one without using a copyrighted photo or making each and every one. I plan on adding more and I would end up with more tote bags than anyone could use. I wish I could do that.

Thanks for commenting.

Thank you for providing many sources for crochet patterns! Do you knit as well? I am always excited to view patterns and projects, even if I don't actually MAKE the item, I like examining the stitches like one would appreciate a fine painting.

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 9 months ago

grannygrunt, No I don't knit, but have tried. I always get it at first and then start adding a twist or something, I'm not sure. One of these days I'll try again.

I like learning new crochet stitches and then using them for my own patterns. Thanks for commenting.

I love crochet anything as my mother used to crochet really good and made me a lot of things. I still have a tablecloth and some doilies that bring back fond memories of her. Nice hub!

Barbara Kay Hub Author 9 months ago

jseven, Thanks for stopping by. I notice you are from Michigan too. I wish I had some vintage items from my relatives, but my Mom never crocheted and my Grandma never left behind anything like that even though she was the one who taught me to crochet.

You are lucky to have these from your Mom.

Hi Barbara! Your hub remind me of the days when I crocheted during my high school years. I often say I am going to start crocheting again, but still have not got back around to it. Thanks for sharing the free patterns, and hopeful your hub will give me a boost to get back to my crocheting.
