Free Crochet Baby Cocoon Patterns

By Barbara Kay

Crochet baby cocoons are something new and are really useful. Everyone seems to be looking for the patterns. I hadn't heard of these until my granddaughter became pregnant and a friend sent some baby clothes. When I found the cocoon, I was a little puzzled and my granddaughter filled me in as to what it was.

Since I crochet, of course I had to try making one of these. They keep babies warm and are especially useful for newborns and when used while the mother is nursing. You don't have to worry about baby becoming unwrapped while you use the cocoon or having little toes peek out. They are especially nice for winter babies, but work well on cool summer evenings too.

They are much like the papooses that Indian women used. They look just like the name implies, a cocoon. They are usually crocheted from the bottom up and are made in just one piece. You'll find the patterns are easy to crochet. These would make great gifts.

Here are some links to free crochet patterns. All patterns will need to be printed. One of the patterns require Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.

This cocoon is a little different than the others, because it is open rather than closed and makes more of a bassinet rather than a blanket. It is from Christina's Crochet Haven.

The cocoon is crocheted with Red Heart Buttercup yarn and is as soft and fluffy as can be. The pattern is offered in PDF format, so you will need Adobe installed on your computer.

The pattern was created with Caron Simply Soft Yarn and a size J crochet hook. Two strands of yarn were crocheted together. You'll have to scroll down to find the pattern on the page.

Crochet this snugly cocoon for baby. It is an easy project since it just uses single and double crochet stitches. It is crocheted with fine yarn and a size J crochet hook.

This free baby cocoon crochet pattern is brought to you by "Chicken Stitches". It is a simple pattern for beginners.

Lion Brand Pound of Love yarn was used to create this cute cocoon pattern that includes a hat. This pattern is recommended for the Intermediate crocheter. You'll need an I hook to complete the project.

The cocoon even has a mermaid tail. It is crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver yarn. This is a cutie.

This cocoon is crocheted from just one skein of Lion Brand Homespun. It won't cost you very much to make.

This free pattern was designed for those who would like to crochet for charity. It is just 14" long, so would probably work well for a small newborn or preemie baby.

Enjoy the free patterns.

Chunky yarn a size 6mm hook was used for this pattern. The bottom looks like any cocoon, but the hat has an owl head.

This pattern is rated Easy to Intermediate. The pattern uses super chunky weight yarn and a size J hook.

You'll need 6 1/2 ounces of worsted weight yarn and a size I hook. You'll also need narrow ribbon as it is worked into the stitches. She mentions that she crochets tightly, so you'll need to check the gauge and may need a larger hook.

This article intrigued me, I have never heard of a baby cocoon. My baby days are over until my own children grow up but still I wonder what this cocoon looks like. I will be off to find out. Thanks for teaching me something new!

They were something new to me too. Someone came up with a good idea and they are much faster to make than the typical baby afghan.

I've been wanting to do one for so long and just haven't had the time. I was going to make my own pattern, or just "wing it" like I usually do when I crochet. I really appreciate this article... The first cocoon I ever saw was a green one and the baby looked so cute.. like a pea in a pod :) take care!

I've been working on my own pattern too. If I ever finish it, I'll share it with everyone. The pea in pod does sound cute.

Thank you so much for the video. I just started crocheting and the first thing I made was a baby beanie and now I'm making the cocoon. It's slow but it looks great. Your instruction is so easy t follow.

Good list! I just "pinned" this and put a link in crochettalk.com crochet forum in answer to a request for a cocoon pattern.

The pin would probably do better if I had a picture I could have used to illustrate it. As it is, the only picture I had to choose from was the flower and unless people read my description, no one is going to know what it is. So far, no one has repinned and I know a lot of folks are interested in these patterns.

Patti, Because these belong to other people, I can't use there photo, but I have a bumble bee cocoon I've been working on. When that is finished I'll post the pattern and put it on here.

I love these patterns, but...... I have been looking for a pattern with a palce for a seat belt and possibly a drawstring at the bottom so baby doesn't have to be completely removed from the warm cacoon to get a dry diaper. Any suggestions ?

Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Hub Author 3 months ago

Donna, That is a good idea, but then it wouldn't be a real cocoon. I wonder if snaps or a zipper couldn't be added at the bottom somehow though. Thanks for the suggestion.

www.aplusbabycrochet.com has a baby cacoon and matching hat that is a free crochet pattern. Gave one to my daughter's friend and she loves it a lot; giving another one for my good friend's son for his little baby. It is extremely easy to crochet.
