How to Remove Pet Hair, Dog and Cat Hair Removal

Cleaning pet hair can be a real chore if not even a nuisance. The hair seems to weave into the fabric of carpets and furniture and just wants to stay. We have two dogs and one is a light shedder and the other is a heavy shedder. The heavy shedder can create a lot of work. So, what are the best ways to remove pet hair?

I thought I'd share with you what I have learned about cleaning up the pet hair in hopes that I can be of help to someone.

To clean furniture, got the the local Dollar Store and buy a roll of cheap packing tape. First vacuum the furniture as best as you can. There is usually still some dog or cat hair left. Cut off a long strip of the tape and use it like a lint roller on the furniture. This seems to work better than even a lint roller. If you buy the dollar tape, it can also be cheaper.

For carpets, it is best to have a vacuum cleaner that has brushes on a roller. The more brushes the better job the vacuum will do. If you can't afford an expensive vacuum like a Kirby or a Rainbow, the Hoover Wind Tunnel works really well. If you need to buy something cheaper than that, just make sure it does have a roller with brushes.

We purchased laminate flooring, so it wouldn't be so hard to clean-up after the dogs. The flooring is easier to clean, but the dog hair does show-up more. The floors get a quick once over with a Rubbermaid Reveal everyday. These are a lot like a Swiffer, but the pads that come with it are machine washable. It is a quick job and isn't too time consuming, so it is possible to do it everyday.

It does help to brush your dog out daily if possible. I say "if possible" because I know it is impossible to do it everyday, but you should do it whenever you can find the time. Since it is a relaxing job if you have a dog that enjoys it, it is good for you too.

If you have more ideas to share, be sure to add them in the comments. We all love our pets, but it can be a real chore to clean up the hair. Just vacuuming the furniture for one, just doesn't do the trick.

That's a great idea with the tape. I use tape instead of the lint roller for my clothes, it's the same tape that they use to make the roller anyway, so it works out cheaper.

I have a vacuum attachment that has a small hard brush and if I use it on furniture in both directions it seems to do a pretty good job. I also keep a blanket on the part of the couch where my puppy sleeps the most. She's not too bad of a shedder though.

For my cat I used to use tape on my clothes, as well. And any fur on furniture came up pretty easily if I moved my palm over the furniture in a circular motion which would clump it up a little. I miss him, but not his fur!

Beau looks very cute and very like our dog Millie :-)

Having a good vacuum is essential (cyclone types are best with a HEPA filter to trap file hairs and dust)...some are so much better than others, and those central vacs just don't cut it.

Before we had a good vac, I used an old rubber soled training shoe to remove hair from carpets...the static created from the rubber on the carpet strands attracts the hair to the shoe and it brings the hair together in a mat (works very well, but is completely exhausting!).

We cover the seats of the couches our dogs sit on the most with fleece blankets which we just throw in the wash..the hairs come out on the trap in the drier..

The tape idea is great, works well for the most annoying places!

ktrapp, The dog hair seems a little stiffer and just kind of weaves into the couch. I wish I could just rub my hand in a circular motion. I use a blanket too, but the dogs are big enough that the back gets covered too.

Thanks for the suggestions for cats though and thanks for commenting.

catsimmons, Thanks for saying Beau is cute, but he needs to go on a diet. I wrote a hub about dog diets and I need to follow my own advice.

Thanks for the advice about rubber soled shoes. I'll have to try that one.

Miss Paula, I'm happy I could help. Thanks for commenting.

Truckstop Sally, We have an Australian Cow Herding dog here that gets combed out everyday and none fail the hair looks like enough for an entire dog. I don't know where all that hair comes from either. I wish it would stop though. I'm tired of cleaning up dog hair. Thanks for stopping by.
